Nomination for Read Now Write Now for Environmental Award Nature Novels Creative Writing Project Liverpool City Region 2025  Storytelling Celebration Event at Liverpool Central Library, October 2025 This project took place across the Liverpool City Region in libraries and green venues run by local authorities between summer and autumn 2025. It was funded by Arts Council England with support from the 6 library services across the LCR. The theme was about nature and biodiversity and we used the LCR Local Nature Recovery Strategy to help plan and inspire the children. In total 236 children actively took part in this project. We always plan our projects to be inclusive and, on this project, we sought to work with children: who live in areas of worklessness / financial disadvantage who live in areas of low creative engagement / activity from ethnic communities and groups who are neuro-diverse.   What Humans Would Do If They Found Another Island By E. Clow 1. ONE MORNING, in an unknown island of the Galapagos, I felt scared and worried as I knew that today something really bad would happen. Something usually goes wrong ,but it’s not that bad, most of the time. I didn’t know what it would be so I decided to check - oh, sorry, I haven’t introduced myself yet! So, this is me; a ten-foot-tall beast, six feet wide, four feet long, massive spidery legs, human body and arms, an owl’s neck so I can look behind me by just turning my head, a bats head, fox’s ears, goat’s eyes and eagle’s wings so I can fly over one island to the other so I’m basically horrifying. I can also run faster than a Cheetah, smarter than Einstein, can jump fifty feet high and can fly from one island to the other. Oh, and I own the place. I am King of the Galapagos Islands. I am the only one of my species left so I have the most secure and brutal security system to keep me safe. So, back to the story:...

Merlin and Doug By Freya Bielby   Dear Diary, Hi, I am Doug, and I have had a very exciting day, but first I will tell you the basics. I have a big brother called Merlin, and he is mean to me (is that an older sibling habit?) Oh, I haven’t told you what we are yet. Me and my bro are oyster catchers. We are the black and white birds you may have seen hanging around beaches and coastlines, and we have orange thin legs and also long orange beaks. We usually hang out in groups of large numbers of about thirty birds. We can live up to fifty years of age, which means that we see quite a lot in our lives. But what happened today was unusual, even for us. Okay, here is what happened… So, we were having a stroll along West Kirby beach. It is normally wet there especially when the tide has gone out, and that is where we hang out. Okay, where was I? Oh yes, and then we saw some mussels. Oh lunch! I thought. You see, despite our name, we don’t eat oysters that much because...

Maria Helps Olivia Owl By Isabella Jenkins This is a story about a girl called Maria. She is a kind, loving, generous girl. She is five years old with blonde curly hair and blue eyes. She loves to wear a pink headband with a blue bow on it. Maria loves the park because she loves nature and learning all about it. The park is full of trees, many have been there for hundreds of years. Things were changing now though. Maria walked through the park gates and sighed sadly; there was a sign up saying that a lot of the trees were going to be cut down to make space for houses. Maria had a special friend in the park, Olivia the Owl. Whilst Maria was in the park she didn’t hear Olivia’s usual cheerful twit-twooing, only little whispers of what sounded like crying noises. When she got home Maria started to think about why Olivia was sad. Although there was play equipment in the park that Maria loved to play on, and which was being kept for the new houses, Maria knew the cold hard...

The Toxic Tall Terrifying Tower of Vale Park By Patrick Sheehan   It was a nice sunny day in Vale Park, New Brighton. The sky was light blue with gentle white clouds moving gracefully in the breeze. The grass was mossy green under the trees around the woods where the fairy village was. Patrick was running through the park, his long yellow curly hair was swaying as he ran. He ran so fast that his royal blue glasses steamed up and he got out of breath. To take a break, he sat down on a bench to have a drink of water from his reusable bottle that he always had with him. He took his bag of peanuts out of his pocket for the squirrels and shook and rustled the bag to get their attention. He watched as they came out of the trees and climbed down to get fed. Patrick watched a fluffy squirrel run off to bury its nuts in the ground, but there was too much rubbish in its way. There were drink cans, plastic bottles and crisps packets all over the ground. Patrick was angry. He wo...

Wilfred Saves His Home By Isaac Jones   Hi! My name is Wilfred the chameleon. I am a nature hero animal and I’m four years old. I change colour when I feel emotions. This morning when I woke up, I was green – this means that I was happy. I jumped off my rock and went into the warm sun, then I turned yellow – this meant I was calm. I love fresh air, and I love my friends too. Deep in the rainforest I enjoy exploring because I am adventurous. I am also autistic. I love bananas and strawberries. My habitat is around the rocks, leaves and trees of the rainforest, where there are plenty of flies to eat. I have got twelve chameleon friends that live with me and we all play games on top of my rock. The rainforest is my favourite place to live because of all the fruits that grow on the trees and the insects who live on them too. The trees make me feel so safe. I like it here because it is fresh, wet and the trees give me lots of fresh oxygen. In the rainforest, it is very ...

The Lily Pad Book By Killian Humphreys   Once upon a time, in the countryside near a town called Swamp Ellens, lived a little green frog called Jeremy. His peaceful cottage, made of lily pads, stood on the muddy edge of a pond. It even had a water-filled basement where he loved to dive. Jeremy loved learning. He spent three hours a day reading in his bedroom, which was packed with bookshelves. He dreamed of becoming an author and writing a book of his own. One morning, Jeremy spotted a large metal object in the field beneath the old oak tree. It was bright yellow with a big clawed arm. A small ginger cat with bright blue eyes sat on it, cleaning his paw while listening to a blackbird sing. Jeremy hopped over and called, “hey, what’s that?” His sudden arrival startled the blackbird, who fell from her nest and landed with a bang on a shiny shovel hidden in the undergrowth. The cat frowned. “I think it’s called a digger.” “I’ve read about those,” Jeremy said...
